Just off Highway 1 south of San Francisco, this lighthouse offers visitors spectacular views from the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean. This lighthouse, situated in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, is on the island that housed the infamous Alcatraz prison. This lighthouse has continuously been in operation since 1855, which makes it the West Coast’s oldest active lighthouse. While here, you can enjoy a guided tour of the tower, browse the museum, and take a self-guided tour of the grounds. The island has a deep history of human use including being the historic home of the Miwok Indians, who used the island for hunting and fishing. They’re actually designated as a California national park, and preserve several hundred thousand acres of land and coastline as a natural habitat for plants and animals. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, ultimately sending 120,000 Japanese Americans to internment camps. Within two days, Terminal Island residents were told they had 48 hours to prepare for relocation. Former Terminal Islanders recall with great sadness giving up almost everything they owned, including businesses their families had built up for generations. Relocated from San Francisco after a slump in sardine fishing and renamed from its former Golden Gate Packing Company, California Fish Co. was located on the main channel of the island across from First Street in San Pedro.

Two-hour tours are offered on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings year-round from the Piedras Blancas Motel. From July 15 – August 15, there are also tours on Monday and Friday mornings. Volunteers provide a 3-hour tour of the area on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays throughout the year. They also offer moonlight tours, ghost hunts, and Halloween tours. Enjoy watching the sunset and then rise by staying in one of the former lighthouse keepers and assistant’s homes.

It had grown out of a small Japanese fishing village whose settlers helped launch a booming industry for canned tuna.
